Sizes, Colors and
Coat Types

Labradoodles are
available in a wide variety of sizes, colors and coat types. The
following are some general guidelines to help you decide what type
your family might like to have.
Sizes
Miniatures range
from 13-17" at the shoulder and weigh 15-30 pounds. Mediums range
from 17-21" at the shoulder and weigh 30-45 pounds. Standards are
22" or more at the shoulder and can weigh 45-90 pounds, occasionally
more, although the preferred maximum weight is generally 65 pounds.
Colors
There are a
variety of colors available, both solid and blended. It is important
to note that there will always be slight variations in color that
will occur. Some puppies coats will lighten or fade and others will
darken. The color names most commonly used are Chalk, White, Cream,
Gold, Apricot, Chocolate, Black, Silver and, most recently, Red.
Others you may hear are Cafe, Caramel and Buff, but they are
generally just variations on the colors listed above. For a
wonderfully detailed description of colors with photos please go to
Spring Creek Labradoodles and scroll down the page.
Coat Types
The following composite will give
you an idea of the variety of coat types available. Of course, hands
on would give you a much better idea, but I will do my best to
describe what I am talking about. It helps if you think in terms of
the difference between the feel of a wool blanket versus a soft
fleece blanket. Wool blankets tend to be a little scratchy. This is
due to the fact that there is generally more kemp (coarse hair) in a
wool coat than there is a fleece coat. Therefore, a fleece coat is
usually very soft to the touch, a wool coat is soft, however, you
are usually able to feel the coarse hair as well. Many of these dogs
have combination coats which, of course, have a level of softness
that falls between a wool coat and a fleece coat.
F1 or First cross
pups result from a Poodle bred to a Labrador Retriever. Their coats
can range anywhere from flat and hairy to very wooly like a poodle.
There is a large variation in thickness and texture as well as
completely non-shedding to full shedding. They can be anywhere from
short to long and are very hard to predict as they can change quite
dramatically as the pup grows. Only the most experienced breeder
would be able to determine what an F1 puppy's coat will be like.
F2 pups result
from an F1 Labradoodle bred to another F1 Labradoodle and typically
have the same variations in their coats as the F1 pups. Experienced
breeders are able to improve coat qualities by careful selection of
the two dogs being bred.
F1B pups result
from F1 Labradoodles being bred back to a Poodle. This is done in
order to improve coat qualities. Most puppies resulting from these
litters have more of the non-shedding, or very minimal shedding
coats, ranging from wavy to curly. Their coats are considered very
similar to a multi-gen coat.
The following
description of the term Multi-gen is courtesy of Rochelle Sundholm
of Spring Creek Labradoodles:
" Multi-gen
Labradoodle: The term Multi-gen means one of two things. Either they
are those bred from lines stemming from Rutland Manor or Tegan Park
in Australia, or Multi-gen lines developed in the U.S. Most people
using the term Multi-gen are referring to the Australian lines,
although that does not encompass the complete technical aspect of
the term, which would include any generation being bred beyond an
F2. Multi-gen coats, regardless of where the lines come from, are
generally very similar. Many people wanting a Multi-gen dog are
desiring this type because they want a dog that has come from the
Australian lines at RM or TP. Spring Creek breeds the Australian
lines and they have also developed their own Multi-gen lines. For

Happy Tails
currently breeds medium to standard multi-gen labradoodles with both
Australian & American lines.
