History of the
Labradoodle
Pat Blum of
Hawaii, a vision impaired woman whose husband was allergic to dogs,
requested John Gosling, the manager for GDAV Guide Dog Services, to
try to produce a non-shedding, allergy friendly service dog. Thus,
in 1989, the first litter of Labradoodles was born. The breeding
manager for GDAV, Wally Conron, mated Harley and Brandy, a Poodle
and a Labrador Retriever, and the first litter produced three
puppies. As the pups matured, fur samples were sent to Pat and one
of the pups proved to be allergy friendly. His name was Sultan and
the combination of his coat, temperament and trainability made him a
perfect guide dog companion for Pat. This was the official beginning
of the Labradoodle.

Quality bred
labradoodles are very smart and easy to train. That, in combination
with the desire for non-shedding, allergy friendly coats, has played
a huge role in the general public becoming very interested in the
breed as family pets.
Labradoodles
and Australian Labradoodles are
not yet a recognized breed by any kennel club, therefore no formal standard
is in place yet. However, a breed standard for both Labradoodles and
Australian Labradoodles has been established by the IALA
(International Australian Labradoodle Association) and can be found
here:

Happy Tail's is in the process of applying for membership in both
the IALA and the ALAA (Australian Labradoodle Association of
America). Please rest assured that our breeders and the stud
services we use have all come from programs that are already
members in these organizations and that we have followed all of
their guidelines and requirements in every aspect of our program
since the beginning. In other words, we have performed all of the
genetic health test requirements that they require their members to
perform on all breeders placed in their programs.
